Nigeria, the land of the absurd, where the biblical proverb “the beggars ride on horseback, and the princes walk as slaves” is a stark reality. In this topsy-turvy nation, the innocent are shackled, while the corrupt and powerful strut around with impunity.
Take the case of Dele Farotimi, a man charged with defamation and libel, a civil matter, yet he’s dragged to court in chains like a common criminal. Meanwhile, Yahaya Bello, the former governor of Kogi State, who’s been accused of plundering the state’s resources and committing various atrocities, strolls into court a free man, with a smirk on his face.
This is a nation where thieves are celebrated, given honorary titles, and awarded doctorate degrees, while hardworking citizens are treated like dirt. A nation with four refineries, yet we import fuel, because our leaders are more interested in lining their pockets than in serving the people.
And the pièce de résistance? The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), which can’t even manage our refineries, wants to control a privately-owned business, Dangote Refineries. It’s like putting a fox in charge of the henhouse.
Nigeria, a land of contradictions, where the rule of law is a joke, and justice is a luxury only the wealthy can afford. But we’ll keep pretending that all is well, that our leaders are working in our best interests, and that the system isn’t rigged against us. After all, as the saying goes, “in Nigeria, anything goes, and nothing surprises.”
