Oh Musical Youth, my dear Musical Youth, how can I forget you guys?
Years of yore was good, music was everything, life was good, evil was almost non-existent, Musical Youth completed my young life, so musically and socially.
I could never have asked for more, I was young, 11 years of age, fresh-faced, high school fresher and Musical Youth never provided a dull moment!
These youngsters from Birmingham had sorted themselves as early as 1979 but it was in 1982 that they hit the world stage with their monumentally hit song “Pass The Dutchie”
I was only in Primary 5 and just 9 years of age but began to catch the chartbuster jamz bug two years later in my early days in secondary school in 1984. I never looked back!
The old cassette player in our sitting room became automatically mine as I refused to let it rest everyday playing Pass The Dutchie and the other album lists like Youth Of Today, Young Generations, Heartbreaker, Never Gonna Give Up… It was some moments to remember for the rest of my life.
The local media then in the old Anambra State would add to my ever growing love for these Jamaican-born stars as they starting showing the videos of Pass The Dutchie and Youth Of Today on TV.
The radio was a closer friend to me as the TV occasionally showed the videos as I became more and more involved with Dennis Seaton and his “brothers”
My pen and paper were handy as I paused and paused to get the grasp of the lyrics and soon it became part of me.
I would never forget my seniors at Nnamdi Azikiwe Secondary School, Abagana, who would never waste time to hand me punishments by singing Pass The Dutchie for them each time I fell short of the school rules.
It is sad the group didn’t last but the impact they left in me would shape my love for music forever.
Indeed, Musical Youth will not easily be forgotten as I have inspired my six year old twin to embrace these wonderful guys.
Mario, my son, is the youngest reggae crooner as he effortlessly sings Musical Youth’s songs with Young Generations topping his like list. He’s really talented, I can tell you for free…
