Chelsea used the Back-three defense setup against Real Madrid in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Quarterfinals at Santiago Bernabeu last Wednesday.
Wesley Fofana, Kalidou Koulibaly and Thiago Silva started together in the heart of the defense while Ben Chilwell and Reece James played in the Wing-backs.

This particular formation might not be possible for Chelsea on Tuesday in the return against the Carlo Ancelotti’s side because they lost two Defenders last week in the first leg as Kalidou Koulibaly had to leave the pitch over an Injury concern while Ben Chilwell was shown a Red Card in the game.
For Chelsea to use the back-three Defense once again, that means Marc Cucurella will have to Start in the Left Centre-back while Lewis Hall will start in the Left Wing-back, a formation that’s highly unlikely.
The likely decision is to go back to the Back-four Defense. This will see Reece James and Marc Cucurella back in the Fullback positions while Thiago Silva and Wesley Fofana will Start together in the defense.
Despite the loss against Real Madrid in the first leg, Chelsea did well defensively, and Eder Militao was full of praise for the defense of the West London club during Real Madrid’s Pre-match Press conference on Monday.
The Brazilian Defender said: “Chelsea did well defensively in the first half of the first leg. They have great players and we can’t afford to slip up.”
