Amid ongoing public debates surrounding the outcome of the just-concluded presidential elections conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Arise news has reported that the chairman of the electoral commission, Professor Mahmood Yakubu alleged that the electronic collation of results was not mandatory.

This was disclosed on their verified Twitter account where they shared a photo of the INEC chairman and part of his speech concerning the issue of electronic collation of results.
However, it could be recalled that the electoral commission had promised to transmit election results electronically but failed to do so during the electoral process. The commission stated that they experienced downtime in the network which posed a problem with electronic result transmission.
Moreover, the Arise Online also revealed that the electoral commission strongly believes that the network downtime is their reason for not transmitting results electronically.
Quoting the exact statement released by the Arise news, it said, “Presidential Election: INEC Says Electronic Collation of Results Not Mandatory, Insists It Acted According to the Electoral Act. This is an indication of the legal line of argument it intends to canvass in its defense at the Presidential Election Tribunal.”
