“A r’aye o e bami jo
A r’aye o e bami yo
Ogoji odun ti mo ti n ba bo
Mo dupe o f’oluwa o…….
The song became a ” national anthem” thereafter.
Owanbe Birthday is not complete without that song till date, since 1982!
Obey’s songs conveys different messages and teachings relating to the happenings in the society, touching on almost every aspect of human life and cutting across different ethnic inclinations. By his music, he has been variously described as a teacher, a prophet, a moralist, a philanthropist, and a philosopher. A legend we are grateful to be alive at the same time as he is.
It’s difficult to choose a favorite song from his timeless collections of songs but in celebration of the legends, 81st birthday, here are some of his songs i picked randomly …..
Enjoy………
1. Ota Mi Dehin Lehin Mi
Released in 1975 “Ota Mi Dehin Lehin Mi” simply means “My Enemy Get Behind Me” I heard a gist back then the song was used to shade people especially the ones you have beef with or certain people who gossiped about you. Simply telling enemies to stay off him and let him live his life as God has ordained it.
2. The Horse, The Man and The Son
One of his most famous songs, if you grew up in a Yoruba household I’m very certain you would have this classic piece “The Horse, The Man and The Son” also called Ko sogbon to le da” is filled with a lot of wisdom explaining no matter what you do, you can’t please everyone.
3. Aimasiko Lo N Damu Eda
This track is full of inspiration like the name implies “Aimo-asiko” which can be said to mean “Fear of Unknown”. This track explains how destiny is in the hands of God that the reason we always get worried is bicos we don’t know tomorrow, that whatever worries you turn to God and he’ll fulfill it. Yeah, the song is like a secular gospel song.
