Prof. Joseph Okwuabudike Ojukwu, elder brother of the late Chief Emeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has clocked an extraordinary 100 years, marking a remarkable milestone in a life defined by medicine, service and scholarship.
Born on September 26, 1926, at Akamili, Umudim, Nnewi, Anambra State, Prof. Ojukwu is the eldest son of the celebrated businessman, Sir Louis Philip Odumegwu Ojukwu.
His journey began at King’s College, Lagos, where he distinguished himself as Head Boy before travelling to Britain to pursue medical education.
He earned the M.R.C.S. England and L.R.C.P. London qualifications in 1951 and subsequently obtained his M.B., B.Chir. from the University of Cambridge in 1952.
A distinguished surgeon, Prof. Ojukwu began his professional career at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, and later became a Consultant Surgeon at General Hospital, Lagos.
His medical career continued through some of the major hospitals in the former Eastern Region. During and after the Nigerian Civil War, he served at Specialist Hospital, Enugu, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Umuahia, and Emekuku Catholic Hospital.
He eventually returned to Enugu and continued his work at what later became the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH).
Prof. Ojukwu’s influence extended beyond the operating theatre. He rose to become a Clinical Professor of Surgery, dedicating part of his career to training and mentoring younger medical professionals.
After decades of service, he retired from active practice in 1987.
