At least 19 people have reportedly been killed and beheaded following a deadly attack in Dekara community, Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, after suspected terrorists allegedly abducted dozens of worshippers and residents during yesterday’s attack.
The victims were reportedly among those abducted during the incident, which began when the attackers invaded Dekara and three neighbouring communities around the time of Friday prayers. About 60 elderly worshippers who were inside a mosque for Juma’at prayers were allegedly taken away.
According to accounts from the affected community, the attackers later returned and abducted about 20 younger men, taking them towards the forest. The victims were allegedly subjected to severe physical abuse, with 19 reportedly killed and beheaded.
One of the victims who managed to escape was reportedly attacked and had his neck slashed twice. The attackers allegedly left him after assuming he was dead. He was later found alive and transported by motorcycle to a hospital in Babanna for treatment.
However, the survivor, who had sustained severe injuries and lost a significant amount of blood, reportedly died later at the Babanna hospital while receiving treatment.
The incident has further heightened fear and anxiety across Dekara and surrounding communities, with residents deeply concerned about the safety of civilians and worshippers following yesterday’s mass abduction.
The reported casualty figures and details of the attack have not yet been independently verified, while there is currently no official confirmation from security authorities regarding the number of people killed or abducted.
Further updates will be shared as confirmed information becomes available.
