The leadership crisis rocking the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is set for a decisive resolution as the Supreme Court of Nigeria prepares to hear the matter on Wednesday, April 22.
At the centre of the dispute is appeal number SC/CV/180/2026, which pits a faction led by David Mark against another aligned with Nafiu Bala Gombe. The legal battle is expected to determine the party’s legitimate leadership structure ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The apex court had earlier signalled urgency in resolving the matter. On April 14, a five-member panel headed by Mohammed Garba granted an accelerated hearing, dismissed an application seeking a stay of execution of the Court of Appeal judgment, and directed all parties to promptly file and exchange necessary documents.
The dispute stems from a March 12, 2026 ruling by the Court of Appeal, which triggered competing claims over the party’s leadership. The Supreme Court’s decision is now expected to provide a final and binding interpretation on the issue.
The outcome will also determine which faction is formally recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), a development seen as critical to the ADC’s preparations for future elections.
With related proceedings in lower courts already stalled pending the apex court’s verdict, the ruling is widely anticipated to bring closure to the protracted internal crisis and define the party’s direction ahead of 2027.
