Tunji Disu was born on April 13, 1966, In the Nigeria Police, once you hit 60 years old or 35 years of service, you are expected to go. If he had remained an AIG, he would have officially retired this coming April 2026. He had less than 2 months left in uniform!
Under normal civil service rules, he should be home by Easter. The new law says once you are appointed IGP, you are entitled to a fixed 4-year tenure, regardless of your age or how long you’ve served.
Instead of retiring in April 2026, IGP Tunji Disu is now legally cleared to lead the Force until 2030. He just gained 4 years at the very top.
This is the exact same path his predecessor, Kayode Egbetokun, took. Egbetokun hit age 60 last year but stayed on because of this same law before his recent resignation.
Is this “Tenure Magic” good for the stability of our Police Force, or should everyone follow the retirement age strictly?
