Venerable Edwin Achi, an Anglican priest from Kaduna who was kidnapped along with his wife and daughter, has sadly passed away while in captivity. His death was confirmed by the Anglican Diocese of Kaduna.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the diocese described the Priest-in-Charge of Ebenezer Anglican Church, Ungwan Maijero, as a devoted servant of God whose “faithful ministry, humility, and steadfast commitment” deeply impacted the church, clergy, and wider community. His wife and daughter, however, are still being held by the abductors.
The diocese urged continued prayers for their safe release.
In tribute to the late priest, the diocese announced the cancellation of its 2025 “Stand Up for Jesus” event, stating:
“Stand Up for Jesus 2025 is hereby cancelled in honour of the late Venerable Edwin Achi.”
According to Daily Trust, Achi and his family were abducted on October 28, 2025, after armed bandits invaded their residence in Nissi community, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna. The family had recently moved to the area before the attack.
The kidnappers reportedly demanded a ransom of N600 million.
Venerable Achi was a native of Umuaja in Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta State.
