Rivers State, once known for its quiet strength and the gentle resilience of its women, is now the epicenter of a powerful political awakening. No longer content with sitting on the sidelines while their state is dragged through the mud of power grabs and political puppetry, the women of Rivers have risen—and they are not backing down.
In a bold and unprecedented move, hundreds of Rivers women staged a mass walkout from an empowerment event organized under the “Renewed Hope Initiative” of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Remi Tinubu. What was meant to be a celebratory event quickly descended into a political statement that thundered across the country: “Respect our people or take your charade elsewhere.”
The catalyst? The insulting decision to sideline the duly recognized First Lady of Rivers State, Lady Valerie Sim-Fubara, in favor of Theresa Ibas—the wife of the so-called “sole administrator” imposed after the illegal ousting of Governor Sim Fubara. The moment her name was announced, the crowd erupted with one message: “We want Valerie Sim-Fubara or Remi Tinubu to address us—not the wife of an imposter!”
This was not just a protest. This was a declaration.
The women’s actions were a loud repudiation of the ongoing federal-backed political manipulation in Rivers. These women—mothers, daughters, breadwinners—have watched their state’s democratic structure be torn apart. Now, they are refusing to legitimize what they see as a puppet regime installed to undermine their choice, their vote, and their dignity.
What’s most telling is that this is no isolated incident. It follows a string of peaceful but defiant protests led by Rivers women since the Fubara crisis began. They have marched in the streets, held vigils, and now, walked out en masse from a high-profile federal event. This is not just about one event or one slight—it’s about the ongoing erasure of their voices, and they are saying, clearly and unequivocally, enough is enough.
If the presidency and the political elite thought the women of Rivers would be easily bought off with bags of rice and sewing machines, they were gravely mistaken. These are women who understand that empowerment means more than token gestures. True empowerment is rooted in respect, representation, and justice.
The Federal Government must wake up. You cannot preach unity while sowing division. You cannot claim to empower women while silencing their elected representatives. You cannot demand respect for authority while propping up illegal structures.
The women of Rivers are no longer just minding their homes. They are now minding their state. And they are doing so with courage, clarity, and conviction.
