In a shocking turn of events, several high-profile members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are reportedly planning to defect to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
According to sources, at least 10 former ministers who served under ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, including Abubakar Malami, former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, and Emeka Nwajiuba, former Minister of State for Education, are set to join the SDP.
Additionally, several senators from the ninth National Assembly, including Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, and former Senate President, David Mark, are also said to be involved in the planned defection.
Other notable APC members reportedly planning to defect include the former National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun; the former National Chairman of the APC, Abdullahi Adamu; and the former Senate President, Ahmed Lawan.
A chieftain of the APC in Imo State, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the party’s success was being mismanaged by President Bola Tinubu, leading to widespread dissatisfaction among northern and southern leaders.
The source noted that the APC’s shrinking size was a clear indication of the party’s decline, adding that the defection of foundation members with genuine followers would have a significant impact on the party’s fortunes.
“It’s confirmed that some ministers who served under Buhari are either leaving or planning to leave the APC,” the source said. “They might not necessarily join the SDP, but they are part of the broader coalition movement.”
The source further claimed that no fewer than 10 former ministers, along with many senators from the ninth National Assembly, were in the process of leaving the APC.
“The CPC bloc of the party has also been leaving. You will agree with me that the CPC is a strong bloc in the APC, and if it is gone, I doubt if the APC will remain the same.”
“Those leaving the All Progressives Congress are foundation members who have genuine followers. Apart from El-Rufai, other former governors are also involved in the political movement. These are not paperweight politicians,” the source added.
The planned defection is seen as a major blow to the APC, which has been struggling to maintain unity among its members since the departure of ex-President Buhari.
