Jimi Solanke as Oba Ovonramwen in Ola Rotimi’s “Ovonramwen Nogbaisi”
Renowned Nigerian film actor, dramatist, folk singer, poet, and playwright Jimi Solanke took on the role of the great Benin monarch, Oba Ovonramwen, in Ola Rotimi’s historical play Ovonramwen Nogbaisi.

The play was staged at Samuel Ogbemudia Hall, and it felt like a true reincarnation of the revered Oba Ovonramwen was standing before the people of Benin. Jimi Solanke didn’t just act the role—he embodied the legendary Oba so profoundly that it was said he became almost godlike on stage.
The performance struck deep emotions among the people of Benin and became the talk of the town for years. The play’s impact was so intense that the late Ọmọ n’Ọba n’Ẹdo Uku Akpọlọkpọlọ, Akenzua II, sent the Edaiken of Uselu to request that Ola Rotimi halt any future performances. The reason? The 1897 British invasion of Benin remained a fresh wound, and the play had resurfaced painful memories for the Benin people.
Ola Rotimi respected the plea, and Ovonramwen Nogbaisi was never staged again.
Celebrating a Living Legend
Today marks the birthday of the man at the heart of that iconic performance—fondly called “Baba Agba” and “The Creative Octopus”. Jimi Solanke remains one of Nigeria’s greatest artistic icons.
