Many talented and beloved stars have come and gone to the great beyond from Nigeria’s ever-evolving movie and drama industry.
Nevertheless, it gladens the heart to know there are still active thespians alive in their old ages.
At 101 years old (as of February 2024), Alhaji Abdulsalam Sanyaolu (aka ‘Agbako’) is surprisingly agile. The extraordinary actor refuses to give up his acting profession. He keeps going to a number of movie locations.
He holds the enviable status of the oldest living and active thespian in Nollywood as we speak.
‘Agbako’, who also goes by the nickname ‘Charles Olumo’, is Nollywood’s first-ever movie villain.
He began his acting career in 1953, while he was still a student. His first acting role was in a friend’s church drama group at an Apostolic Church in Mushin.
People were quick to notice his outstanding performance – they mistook him for the drama group leader. From then on, several other churches invited him to train their drama groups.
‘Agbako’’s skillful acting earned him many key roles in Yoruba movies. They include ‘Jagun’, ‘Ija Ominira’, ‘Saworo Ide’, ‘Aiye’, ‘Jaiyesimi’, ‘Taxi Driver’, and ‘Igbo Dudu’.
