Bayo Onanuga sparked reactions among Nigerians when he pushed for an exclusion of Igbos from Lagos politics following the governorship election in the state. In the post he made on Twitter then, which was also carried by several media platforms, he said that 2023 should be the last time that Igbos will interfere in Lagos politics. He said that Lagos is like Anambra, Imo and any other state, and that it is Yoruba land and not a no man’s land.
While speaking when he met with some South-East leaders under the auspice of Anya Ndigbo at his office in Ikoyi, Lagos, Bode George said that if Onanuga is not careful, they will ban him from Lagos because he does not have the right to talk on behalf of Lagos.
In the report which was made by Vanguard on Tuesday May 2nd, Bode George said – “And until now, Bayo Onanuga has not apologized for the comment, and I expect Prof Wole Soyinka to tell him to apologize rather than be abusing Datti Baba-Ahmed. That was misnormal, senseless and insane to make that kind of comment in a country where we are still trying to build the nation. How can you tell them that they can’t come here? Is that the culture of Lagos? Lagos is the commercial-nerve centre, not only for Nigeria but for the whole of West Africa.”
Speaking further, he said – “So, I want to apologize as a true born and genuine Lagosian that that is not our style and attitude. We must stop it. If Bayo Onanuga is not careful, we will also ban him from Lagos. He can’t talk on behalf of Lagosians. What authority does he have to make such a comment?”
